Most web developers install multiple types of web browsers so that they are able to test their HTML/CSS/Javascript code on the wide array of web browsers on the market.
Browsers such as Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome and Opera are all fighting for market share and we need to make sure that our web site work in all of them.
That would be the most common reason to install multiple browsers. What’s my other reason?

Well, I’ve finally ended my battle with Opera Link by uninstalling Opera 10.51 and going back to Firefox.
Let me recap you on what got me to this point:
- Got intrigued by Opera 10.5 when it was released, looked awesome, and I liked the idea behind Opera Link
- Installed Opera 10.5 on my home desktop computer and started to use it
- Liked it so much that I installed it on my work desktop computer and my laptop, and I enabled Link to keep the bookmarks synced up
- Had problems with Opera Link not syncing correctly, not being able to delete bookmarks (they kept coming back no matter what), duplicates, triplicates, pulling in bookmarks from Firefox (without my permission) and trying to sync those with my other installations of Opera – basically just making a huge mess out of my organized bookmarks.
- Tried some solutions that I found on the Opera forums, to no avail – I seem to now have a ghost bookmarks that show up whenever I install Opera and connect to Link on any computer, can’t get rid of them at all
- Got frustrated
- Drank beer
- Tried it all again, with renewed confidence that my second round of trying to make this work would be successful
- Got frustrated
- Drank beer
Now that I’ve lost many hours of my life due to trying to get Link to work, I’ve decided to cut off the problem at the source and get back with my normal daily life.
I’ve uninstalled Opera from all my computers and am going back to Firefox, I’m just gonna use Xmarks to keep my bookmarks synced up.
Even though my whole Opera experience was soured by the inconsistencies and weird issues with Link, I will give it a try again in the future, when I have some time to try to sort out all the problems. In the meantime, I need a browser that just works so I can get some other work done.
It was a fun adventure, and I hope others have good luck using Opera Link – it just didn’t work for me and became a huge source of frustration.
Too bad, Opera 10.5 looked really nice and loaded pages very, very fast.
